  • Therapy held virtually involves the use of a secure online platform that adheres to Canadian privacy laws. You will be sent a personalized link where you can log-on for appointments using a computer, tablet, smartphone, or other electronic device with web access.

It is important that you have access to a private space for your session. You must be physically located in Ontario at the time of your session. This is because psychologists at Recovery Paths are licensed to provide services in Ontario only.

  • A psychologist is a regulated health professional. Psychologists at Recovery Paths each have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and have extensive training in treating complex clinical issues, including co-occurring addiction and mental health problems; research; and various forms of psychotherapy and psychological assessment. Psychologists in Ontario are governed by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario.

A psychiatrist is a type of physician with a medical degree, and also a regulated health professional. Psychiatrists are extensively trained in the treatment of mental health and substance use disorders using various medications. Some psychiatrists may also provide psychotherapy.

Psychologists have extensive training to assess, diagnose, and treat psychological problems using psychotherapy, but they cannot currently prescribe medication. The services of psychiatrists are covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). The services of psychologists are not covered by OHIP, but are covered by many extended health insurance plans.

  • A psychologist is a regulated health professional. Psychologists at Recovery Paths each have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, and have been trained in research and various forms of psychotherapy and psychological assessment. Psychologists in Ontario are governed by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario.

A registered psychotherapist is also a regulated health professional. Registered psychotherapists have a master’s-level degree or graduate diploma education, and practice psychotherapy. Registered psychotherapists in Ontario are governed by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Psychologists have extensive training to assess, diagnose, and treat psychological problems using psychotherapy. Registered psychotherapists also practice psychotherapy, but are not able to diagnose mental health and substance use disorders.

  • Psychotherapy is not a first-line treatment for Opioid Use Disorder; only medications for Opioid Use Disorders are recommended as a primary form of treatment. Psychotherapy involving Motivational Interviewing and relapse prevention has been found to be helpful as adjunct treatments (i.e., provided together with pharmacological treatments).

  • For many mental health and addiction challenges for which people seek therapy, research has demonstrated that virtual and in-person services are equally effective. In some instances, based on the severity of a problem or a person’s therapy goals, in-person services may be advised. The psychologists at Recovery Paths would inform you if this was their professional opinion after learning about your situation, symptoms, and needs.

Some people may have or develop a preference for either virtual or in-person therapy. If you feel like virtual therapy is not a fit for you at any time after receiving services from us, we will explore options with you that may better suit your needs.
